Please join us for the inaugural meeting of the St. John’s University Student Great Books Discussion Group (GBDG) on Wednesday, September 9, 2009 at 4:30 PM in the Honors Commons.

The newly-forming GBDG is co-sponsored by the University Libraries (Prof. Arthur Sherman and Prof. Caroline Fuchs) in partnership with the Honors Program (Dr. Robert Forman).

7DeadlySins  The readings will be taken from the Great Books Foundation’s anthology The Seven Deadly Sins Sampler, and will include short stories by such authors as William Falkner, Flannery O’Connor, Edith Wharton, Tobias Wolff, Rudyard Kipling, Margaret Atwood, Anton Chekhov, Bobbi Ann Mason, Elizabeth Bowen, Raymond Carver, Xu Xi, Perri Klass, and Nathan Englander. Multiple copies of the anthology will be placed on reserve . They can be found at the Service Desk of the library, and will be available for 24-hour loan.

The first meeting, to be held on September 9th, will introduce the group members to the philos0phy of the GBDG and will serve as an opportunity for participants to meet one another.  This will be followed by a short reading will be distributed, followed by a brief discussion of that reading.

Each GBDG meeting will focus on a reading relating to one of the seven deadly sins. The group will meet on the following days in the Honors Commons at 4:30 PM:

  • Wednesday, September 9, 2009 — introduction/meet & greet
  • Tuesday, October 13, 2009 — Topic: Pride
  • Tuesday, November 10, 2009 — Topic: Envy
  • Wednesday, December 9, 2009 — Topic : Anger
  • Wednesday, February 10, 2010 — Topic: Sloth
  • Wednesday, March 10, 2010 — Topic: Greed
  • Wednesday, April 14, 2010 — Topic: Gluttony
  • Wednesday, May 12, 2010 — Topic: Lust
